Running your own business can feel daunting but I know I’d never want to be doing anything else. And now is a great time to be doing it, technology has made it much easier and cheaper to run a business and get your name out to millions. But it is you that will make your business special, here are 7 things you should know.
1 You are driving the economy
In the UK 96% of businesses are micro-businesses employing 0-9 people equating to 33% of the employment in the country and 22% of the turnover and over a fifth are led by females.
2 Be proud you run your own business
You’re not just a freelancer or self employed, you run a business, you make a difference, you are CEO or whatever title you want to give yourself – I have ideas inspirer on my card.
3 Do what you are passionate about
If you follow your passion you will attract people who will buy from you – there is nothing more appealing than a person who is doing what they love, you know the way they talk about it is inspiring. Also, it can be tough running a business and following your passion will keep you going when you hit obstacles
4 Know what success looks like for you
Business success is not an absolute, it’s important to be clear about what success means to you. What you want to achieve
5 Progress not perfection
It’s important to celebrate what you have achieved even when it feels you still have a long way to go. The horizon is always a long way away however far you travel towards it but you have travelled and often it can feel like what you want achieve is always on the horizon and you don’t look back to see the distance travelled. Perfection is impossible but progress is critical
6 Keep focused
Particularly when things get tough the grass can look greener doing something else and there are many people ready to offer ideas of businesses that you can do to make money. But your focus will be split and the danger is neither business will flourish. Focus is critical for success.
7 Develop your business skills
Running a business requires a lot of juggling and you need to develop the various skills you need from marketing and sales to accounting and customer management.
